Systems Thinking for Sustainability

This National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsored research-based elective course of study will offer students a unique opportunity to develop projects as members of a collaborative team. Together, these dynamic and interactive teams will tackle challenges involving complex systems where economic, social, and technical factors interact, ultimately producing innovative solutions at a variety of scales.

One of the 21st century’s global challenges is sustainable development. In its broadest terms sustainability impacts not only the environment, but expands to include issues related to the economic and societal domains. Often these problems are addressed singularly within a single field; however, this course will prepare students to work synergistically across disciplines while applying an integrated, systems-based thinking approach to problem solving to achieve sustainability.

This valuable experience is an essential preparation to the student’s senior capstone projects and other research based inquiry.
