The application of lean in healthcare has been an emerging area to reduce cost, eliminate errors and prevent patient harm. Most techniques available today are heavily centered on kaizen activities and effort by small groups or persons to implement lean across the hospital. Unfortunately, most lean translations in healthcare suffer from misunderstood change management practices that are very unique compared to how most hospitals operate. Most importantly, many practitioners fail to realize that lean healthcare is not about how one department (such as pharmacy, radiology, laboratory, surgical areas or the emergency room) chooses to operate but how they all agree to operate. The University of Kentucky Lean Systems Program understands how to implement lean consistently by working with leadership and management. Learn from the UK Lean Systems Group how lean healthcare can be applied at your organization and ways to improve the quality and affordability of healthcare.
